Modern Tales, the online subscription comics clearinghouse and technology provider, has launched a girlamatic.com, a webcomics anthology targeting female comics reader. Subscriptions cost $1.95/month or $19.95/year, and after May 1, the rate for new subscribers will go up to $2.95/month or $19.95/year.

Here’s how Joey Manley, the publisher of Modern Tales describes the new site, somewhat quixotically: “It’s not about ‘levelling the playing field’ or correcting social injustices. It’s about reaching out to an audience that has typically felt excluded from the comics industry. Girlamatic is ‘for women’ in the same way that Esquire Magazine is ‘for men’ — women write for Esquire, and women read Esquire, but the editorial focus is definitely geared in one particular direction, for business ends. Girlamatic is a business, unashamedly so.”
