Media and telcom conglom Vivendi Universal posted a 7 percent rise in Q4 sales as its mobile unit SFR helped compensate for weaker music and games sales that missed expectations.
The company, which has made some sort of a recovery over the last three years, ds now back on the acquisition trail, looking to strengthen its telecoms, media and games businesses which include World of Warcraft, a popular online game, and Universal Music Group, the world’s biggest record label.
For UMG, it reported revenues of 1.682 billion euros, down 1.7 percent. Digital sales of Euro 259 million were almost three times 2004 sales and represented 5.3% of UMG’s total revenues. In the U.S., total album unit sales for the industry as measured by SoundScan fell 7.2%3, while sales of digital tracks grew from Euro 141 million in 2004 to Euro 353 million in 2005.
In related news, CEO Jean-Bernard Levy said his company was considering raising its 18 percent holding in NBC Universal.
