I find this announcement by Verizon weird on a number of fronts.

Verizon already has banner ads on the news, weather, and sports sites they feature and this has been the case for as long as I can remember. For example, ESPN is running a banner ad for Pontiac right now on their home page.

Users have for sometime been able to access the Internet with their phones and I see no indication that Verizon has any control over their content.

As stated in the NYT article $150 million was spent on such advertising in 2006” much of that appears on Verizon phones.

The media has really been asleep at the switch on this one and there is a real story for MocoNews to jump on if you are so inclined.
