STAR India’s Channel V is working on a broadband content portal called Channelv2.com, and intends to allow users to upload content and get paid for it. Content will be under a Create Commons license, and users will be allowed to download content from the site too. More at Business Standard.
I just checked the site, and it’s still under development. The site currently hosts music videos from some Indian pop bands, a Channel V “Blogumentary” from one of their concerts, and some rather amusing promos under ‘[V] stuff’. Not much content up yet, but the search seems to be rather fast. Other sections on the site include Humour, Animation, Documentary, Travel, Ads and Downloads. There are also plans for blogs. Channel V obviously will promote the site on their TV channel, but they have to monitor the content that gets published on the site: one usually finds copyrighted content on video portals out of India.
I’m on a 256kbps connection, which is standard as far as broadband with unlimited access go, and faster than dialup: every time I have to view a video online, I first have to wait for it to buffer. As far as uploading goes, there are other constraints: webcams aren’t pervasive, phones with cameras are but users have to transfer content via bluetooth to their PC and then upload to share. That’s perhaps one step too many, and while all this will hinder mass adoption – I don’t see it stopping those who really want their content up on video portals for others to see.
