Symbian has reported a 52 percent increase in shipments of handsets with its smartphone operating platform in the second quarter to hit 18.7 million handsets, due mainly to the recent success enjoyed by Nokia. It has also reduced the average royalty rate from $5.70 down ot $4.30 to “reflect the downward trend of phone costs in the market”. I guess Nokia being its biggest customer and owning 47.9 percent of the company had something to do with that. Symbian’s revenue increased by 7 percent to 44.1 million pounds (US$88.21 million) reports Dow Jones. Symbian said 145 million handsets have been shipped with its operating system since it was founded in 1998.
