People across the country will probably be able to pay their water, electricity and other utility bills online, thanks to the urban development ministry’s project on e-governance in municipalities. [via Economic Times] One can only hope the project is implemented “soon.” Apparently, the national mission on e-governance in urban local bodies will cost Rs 787 crore and will cover 423 cities across the country.

Having this information available online will be great for both the customers and utilities, and communication will benefit the long-term success.
It is never too late. However, as per my knowledge many states already provide this facility, like Tamil nadu and Andhra Pradesh. AP has one of the best E-governance site, with their utilities area being extremely user friendly apart from enabling users to seek suggestions from other users. This is probably not seen even in first world countries. So, hurray to our government!(No, I am not this liberal with kudos, but sometimes even our govt. deserves it:))
In Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) there is a service named " Tele bhugtan" I think those people are way ahed as citizen of Jabalpur only require Telephone to pay his utility bill there is no need of Internet/ATM/computer etc.
More over there transactions are so safe that even by knowing someone else password one can not make his own payment. But what I think that major problem with this type of facility is " Implementation". Well thanks to implementing agency in Jabalpur they have performed nicely and I am paying my Utility bill since last one year very safly. One more important aspect of this "Tele bhugtan " that recently this e governance project got State level award. for more info any body can contact The Collector, Jabalpur or Mr Niket Kale on 09300984433.
