This is remarkably well thought out…not! A parliamentary committee has proposed that Network Service Providers – both mobile and Internet – be held liable for the transfer of any content passing through or for any crime committed via their networks reports ET. This effectively means that the government wants the ISPs and mobile operators to monitor all traffic to and from India. Says the committee:
“When their platform is abused by obscene and objectionable content, the service providers should not be absolved of responsibility. A definite obligation must be cast upon them in view of the immense and reckless damage caused,” the cross-party parliamentary committee has said.
The task is next to impossible (do they screen every video clip and message before transmitting data to the user?), but it is obviously the only way to police the anarchic web, apart from pulling up those accessing the content. But by that logic, shouldn’t the government be held liable for accidents on the road? Strange…The service providers intend to meet government officials this week to reason with them. Another proposal is for imposing a fine of Rs. 25 crore for failure to protect user data, which will affect job and matrimonial sites.
