While it does not yet translate to mobile exactly as one would like, a google custom search engine loaded with only mobile sites works well. If they offer specific mobile versions of the custom search engine it would improve the user experience. Check out our google cse here http://www.cpatl.mobi
Very well written, Dianne, and thanks for quoting my speech.
I think the months ahead will prove to be very interesting. Hopefully next year at the Mobile Search Conference we won't be talking about whether Google will be #1 or not, but instead we will be marvelling at the next big innovation that came out of nowhere and took the world by storm!
3 years later, google mobile search still sucks
scrolling sucks to even on an iphone
most of the world dont have one still, and wont
it should only provide mobile versions of sites, whether m. .mobi or iphone. whatever
they should have priority over all other sites as they are giving the comsumer what they want
if they want a specific url they can use direct navigation
other players have been slow to take advantage of google messing up
bing have a huge chance to try and dominate the mobile search

At the moment the user experience with mobile search engines is limited, in most cases, the transcoding of the web desk.
It does not seem that this starting point is the most appropriate to attract new mobile users.
