"Somewhat-sleepy site?" The redesign was just that -- a new look and new nav with some new content, but nearly all the content that garnered NYMag.com two consecutive best website awards from the MPA has been alive and thriving for the past two years. Until recently, NYMag has poured a lot more resources into the web than its peers and had one of the more aggressive internet strategies early on (with a much higher percentage of revenue coming from the web than other magazines, even more impressive given the fact that New York's ad pages are still climbing versus the industry's nosedive). For standalone title that doesn't have the money-wasting abilities of a CondeNet or Time Inc Interactive, it's done pretty good.
