Global gaming and animation giants such as Sony (NYSE: SNE) Computer Entertainment and The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) are rolling out products in regional languages, in a bid to capture a potentially lucrative market. Business Standard reports that Sony will launch at least six regional language games in Hindi this year, after their first Hindi title, Hanuman, sold 10,000 units on day one and is slated to sell more than the company originally expected. Apart from Hindi, Sony will also develop Playstation games in Tamil Bengali, Telugu and Punjabi. In the pipeline are games developed around Indian mythology (predictable) and adventure games based on the Mumbai under world (interesting!). The BS story quotes Atindriya Bose, country manager – playstation, Sony Computer Entertainment, as saying that the sales of Hanuman have proved the potential of regional language games. The company has apparently revised sales estimates of Hanuman to 50,000 units in the first year, as against the 30,000 units originally planned. International titles typically sell around 15,000 units, Bose told BS.
The Walt Disney Co. (India) today said it will publish comic books featuring its universally loved characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald duck through an agreement between a subsidiary and local publisher Diamond Publishing. The company has timed the launch of the comic books to coincide with the summer school vacation.
