Why is the New York Times doing this all of a sudden? My guess is that this is purely due to their dire financial situation. Every single ad dollar lost puts them one step closer to bankruptcy.

may i remind you that enron's internal numbers worked for years.

ok, that's a little over the top, but unless nyt (and anyone else who bytches about their counts) opens them up for verification, it's all hot air.

otherwise, if nielsen, quantcast, compete and (even) alexa employ a methodology that is consistent across all web properties then i'd say the numbers are fair for comparison purposes.
