Nokia is distancing itself even more from the Symbian operating system by agreeing today to sell the Symbian Professional Services unit, responsible for customer support, to Accenture. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Last year, Nokia decided to purchase Symbian, so it could open it up and let the software stand on its own. The idea was for other handset manufacturers to be more comfortable adopting a platform that had previously been tied so closely to Nokia (NYSE: NOK). By selling the professional services unit, Nokia gets one step closer to achieving that. All 165 employees will transfer to Accenture as a result of the transaction, which is expected to close by the end September, pending normal closing procedures. The unit currently provides engineering consulting and product development services worldwide to mobile phone manufacturers, chip manufacturers and mobile operators.
