Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Communications’ President and COO Dennis F. Strigl informed the company of his intentions to retire at the end of the year, after being one of the major forces behind the carrier and the industry more broadly. Release.

Strigl, who was listed as being 62 years old in recent public documents, has been in the communications industry for 41 years, and in a release announcing his retirement, was called a “key architect” of the wireless industry and of Verizon Wireless, where he was president and CEO before taking his current role in 2007. Strigl: “I believe that we have the ability and the will to grow and take share from our competition, even in uncertain times. Because we have the right leadership team in place to continue our success in the marketplace, I believe that this is an appropriate time to announce my retirement.”
