Seesmic has bought Ping.fm, a service which lets users post updates to more than 46 sites from one place. Seesmic lets its own users manage their Twitter and Facebook accounts via its desktop and mobile apps — and the impetus for the purchase is likely Ping.fm’s two employees who are joining Seesmic and will now work to integrate their service with Seesmic’s apps, according to CNET. They’re going up against a series of competitors — from the big portals to the recently funded Nomee — which are also trying to make it easy for users to manage all their social networking accounts.
Financial terms of the deal were not announced. Ping.fm had raised an undisclosed angel round last December from Creative Commons CEO Joi Ito and LinkedIn CEO Reid Hoffman.
Seesmic, which started out as a video blog commenting platform but switched strategies, has raised more than $12 million, including $6 million in a second round in June 2008. It purchased Twhirl, a desktop client that lets users connect with various social networking accounts, in August 2008.
