Well… that was certainly depressing. Don’t put us out to pasture alongside Newsweek just yet.
re: “Magazines served a very good purpose in their day”
Rafat. As you might have predicted, I’m going to jump in here to once more say, the “magazine” is a format. The magazine format is not the same as the business model of newsweeklies. Magazines (the format) don’t always unite cultures. Magazines (the format) have lots of other purposes. Indeed, the vast majority of magazines have nothing to do with uniting cultures. The vast majority of magazines don’t even carry advertising or sell at the newsstand. The vast majority of magazines don’t even have a business model — they are published to support another business model. (i.e., they are a premium of association membership or an alumni publication). I agree with you on your premise of newsweeklies and many other types — even categories — of magazines: they may have outlived their purpose. But as I always say, as long as there are coffee tables, there will be magazines.
so so true Rafat… and put another way: http://blogs.rassak.com/everythingcommunicates/2008/12/03/one-generations-halo-effect-is-anothers-or-disrupt-yourself-before-some-18-year-old-does-it-for-you/
