Leveraging its $720 million deal with the NFL, Verizon Wireless has rolled out a new app in time for the 2010 NFL football season. It is free to download, but with millions banking on partnership, Verizon hopes to convert NFL fans into paying customers. To watch full video broadcasts of the games, subscribers will have to pay $10 a month for Verizon’s V Cast service. However, all audio broadcasts are free, and any customer who downloaded the app prior to today will be rewarded by having free access to the videos as well.
The app will be available on about a dozen handsets, including Android, BlackBerry and some feature phones. Even those not wanting to pay the monthly fee will have access to a ton of information during the season. Users will be able to get alerts about players and games. And those who are willing to pay will have access to video from the NFL’s popular RedZone commentary channel.
Verizon hopes to piggy-back on the success of the World Cup. It streamed all 64 games, which generated more live streams associated with that content than ever before, said Colson Hillier, Verizon’s executive director of multimedia and content. It also hopes this will generate more interest in the carrier’s other content.
