Microsoft’s MSN, which introduced new ‘Local Edition’ pages as part of its big homepage overhaul earlier this year, is now adding localized deals to those pages as part of a relationship with Gannett-owned ShopLocal. The ‘Local Edition’ pages, which let visitors see local weather, traffic, news stories, and restaurant reviews in one place, now also prominently feature newspaper-like ad circulars touting deals at local branches of major chains. Users can browse and ‘flip’ through the online circulars and also hover over products to see more information, including product reviews.
ShopLocal is owned by Gannett, which last month announced a local ad sales partnership with Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO). We had heard some buzz that MSN and Gannett were working on a similar deal and have asked Microsoft if the ShopLocal tie-in signals a broader relationship between MSN and Gannett (NYSE: GCI).
