Motorola (NYSE: MOT) has acquired 280 North, a startup that, at least on the surface, doesn’t have any obvious ties to mobile.
The company has been focused on building high-end application-like experiences in the desktop browser, including a service called 280 Slide, which is similar to PowerPoint, but works in the browser. The acquisition was first reported by TechCrunch. Apparently, 280′s technology will translate well to mobile. In a statement, Motorola said: “We believe 280 North will be instrumental in helping us continue to foster the Android ecosystem with innovative web-based technologies and applications.”
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but apparently 280 North was purchased in early summer. According to multiple sources, TechCrunch said the purchase price is around $20 million, easily beating the $250,000 in a 2008 angel round.
