Which raises the point Bewkes was making. If Netflix continues to go for bigger and bigger programming deals, they’re going to have to raise the price point to cover the kind of costs HBO has—the kind that translate to charging the consumer roughly double what Netflix does per month.

There is tremendous consumer value in offering serialized drama and reality show episodes “day after” for those who missed an episode and need to catch up. That consumer need is very different from watching a season on DVD or reruns on cable 3+ years later. Netflix distribution or that from competitors like Hulu, Apple and cable VOD in that window would not cannibalize later-stage channels. HBO and Showtime on VOD already prove this model not only works, but helps build audience loyalty to the show.
