U.S. 2010 digital revenue: $270 million
Snapshot: Like fellow yellow pages publishers Yell Group and AT&T, both of which are also on our list, SuperMedia has a growing online advertising business. It includes sites like Superpages.com, Switchboard.com and Localsearch.com. The company also provides a suite of online marketing services to small businesses.
It has tried to distinguish itself from other directory companies by heavily promoting its “SuperGuarantee.” If a consumer complains about an issue with a SuperMedia advertiser, SuperMedia promises to work to resolve the issue or, alternatively, reimburse the consumer up to $500.
Key digital move in 2010: SuperMedia, which was previously known as Idearc, emerged from bankruptcy at the beginning of 2010 and took on the SuperMedia name. The company has struggled since; its stock has collapsed amid poor financial results and CEO Scott Klein resigned in October. There has been some speculation that SuperMedia could merge with Dex One.
How we generated our estimate: BIA/Kelsey estimates the company generates about 13 percent of its $2.1 billion in U.S. revenue from digital operations. Borrell Associates says the number is $260 million.
