U.S. 2010 digital revenue: $530 million
Snapshot: Monster Worldwide competes head-to-head with CareerBuilder in the job-search market in the U.S. Monster brought in 25.5 million visitors in January, while CareerBuilder was right behind with 25.1 million. CareerBuilder, however, holds a small lead in revenue.
Monster Worldwide was hit hard during the recession and hasn’t quite recovered: Its overall revenue dropped to $905 million in 2009 from $1.3 billion the year before. While sales were up in 2010, the increase was in the low single digits and revenue remains below 2010 levels.
Key digital move in 2010: Monster Worldwide purchased Yahoo’s HotJobs recruiting site in February for $225 million in a deal that it said would significantly expand its reach. The deal closed in August and the two sites were integrated under the Monster brand name last month.
How we generated our estimate: The publicly traded company said 58 percent of its total revenue came from the U.S. in 2010.
