Loading issues are a problem, but my biggest disappointment was with content. There's very little news in this app and lots of glitz. A handful of very nicely done pieces and photos, but I was struck by how little news was available. I'm assuming the publisher is hoping this will become the "go to" app over morning coffee. For $40 a year, I'm going to need a lot more news content, not to mention content that appears faster than it takes to brew a pot of coffee. NYT and NPR still my morning read.

The Daily's main problem is not technical. Its main problem is the problem that NewsCorp shares with the NYT and every other premium outlet that thinks large numbers of people will pay for subscriptions to their electronic newspapers: people don't have enough money to subscribe to everything they want to read. More importantly, they don't have to because much of what they want to read is available for free.

The subscription model worked for local papers when all you had was your local paper and the TV news. If you lived in Houston, you needed to know what was going on in Houston, so you subscribed to the Chronicle (or to the Post once upon a time a long time ago...). That was all the news you got and it was all the news you needed. More important, it was all the news you wanted.

The Internet changed all that, and it changed it permanently. Now, you expect to be able to read about what happened at the city council last night, and about the protests Tahrir square yesterday, and about that shooting at Youngstown State on Saturday. You don't have enough money, however, to subscribe to every outlet that has the information you want. Fortunately, you don't have to subscribe. Most of it is available for free. You have become accustomed to this. You are not going to change. The news industry will have to change to accommodate your expectations.

The Daily will fail because insists on trying to squeeze money out of people who simply do not have to pay it to get what they want.

I think for their first four day out there, it is a fun experience.

Will hold them to a higher bar at some point, but reasonably pleased.

Moment of truth will be my wallet behavior In two weeks. Till then, a pleasant and free ride.

It is only a few days old, and I will cut it a little slack. It is a fun read, and I guess that is my first litmus test. I tried The Project out, and I left mid-read. Nothing made it digital.

This is a true digital publication, and I do give them credit for that. Do I want to pay for content? That is another question, and only time will tell.

Oh, stop being so dramatic -- "The Daily has a BIG PROBLEM". No, the daily has some bugs to fix and when it's done, people will love reading it, unlike my experience reading this insignificant article.

Very much in agreement, as I have experienced some of the same problems. Great concept, nice design, though my excitement wanes daily for The Daily. Other annoyances are fixed font size and lack of a story archive. No subscription for me until the issues are resolved. As an alternative, I'm actually enjoying the free USA Today app quite a bit.
