Gannett (NYSE: GCI) has hit the “reset button” on its brand and now has someone to continue to steer it. The McLean, VA-based media company, which has been trying to emphasize its digital and mobile strengths on top of its traditional publishing and broadcasting properties, has hired former NBC Universal (NSDQ: CMCSA) executive Maryam Banikarim as its first CMO to manage the refurbished brand.
Earlier this month, Gannett unveiled a new, more minimal logo as a way of communicating its new image. It also began putting together a trade marketing campaign aimed at advertisers and agencies touting the new brand image. The ads are running on cable news, print, and, naturally, across digital and social media.
At NBCU, Banikarim was SVP of integrated sales marketing and worked on the company’s cross-platform programs for the Women at NBCU network of female-focused content. Before that, Banikarim served as the Univision’s CMO. Release
