Some new details on what Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has in store content-wise for YouTube: The WSJ reports that the video site will spend $100 million to create as much as 5 to 10 hours a week of original content for as many as 20 “channels” it will feature on a redesigned home page. It’s not clear from the report what type of content that would include, but we imagine it would fall under the general categories of user-generated popular content the site currently lists on its homepage, which include news and politics, style, music and travel.
The report comes less than a month after YouTube purchased Next New Networks, which produces a number of web shows. There have also been recent reports that it has been reaching out to celebrities to create their own self-branded YouTube pages, and the site has hired several prominent entertainment executives in recent months but hasn’t fully explained what their jobs involve. The WSJ says in its story that some of the “channels” may debut later this year, although a YouTube spokesman tells us any changes that may occur will happen gradually.
