Reuters (NYSE: TRI) News’ chief Stephen J. Adler is bringing in a set of new managers for his editorial team. The new faces include high-profile names such as former Dow Jones (NSDQ: NWS) Newswires president Paul Ingrassia and Jim Gaines, the former Time, Life and People managing editor who most recently held the ME post at News Corp.’s “iPad newspaper” The Daily.
The hires are part of a continued refocusing of Reuters’ news gathering and presentation that began with Adler’s shift from SVP and editorial director of the news service’s Professional division to EIC of Reuters News in February.
In his new job, Ingrassia will serve as Adler’s deputy editor-in-chief and will oversee “news content creation.” Gaines will be taking a somewhat less traditional newsroom job. He’s been given oversight of ethics, standards and innovation, which will entail codifying and enforcing guidelines governing “accuracy, fairness, and sound reporting practices.”
Rounding out the hires, Stuart Karle, former general counsel to The Wall Street Journal, will become chief operating officer to oversee all support functions for the news organization, while Reginald Chua, previously editor-in-chief of The South China Morning Post, is joining as Reuters’ data editor, with the mandate of figuring out various ways to build news and stories around the financial news service’s extensive market data.
As the internet has changed the game for how news is accessed and distributed, Reuters and its rivals, Bloomberg and Dow Jones, have been working for the past few years to streamline and refocus their respective operations to take better advantage of multimedia and attract a broader business audience.
Adler’s move from the professional division a year after arriving at Reuters — following his departure as BusinessWeek’s EIC as it was in the process of being sold to Bloomberg — has compressed those efforts as he’s put his stamp on the newsroom quickly.
For example, earlier this month, Chrystia Freeland was put in charge of the company’s interactive efforts in the newly-created post of editor of Thomson Reuters Digital.
Other names on Adler’s put in place on his management team include Amy Stevens, executive editor for Professional News; Reuters Breakingviews editor Hugo Dixon; and Adrian Dickson, global editor for editorial product.
Full Disclosure: Stuart Karle has done some legal work for ContentNext over the past couple of years.
