The main issue is marketing with self-publishing. I'm self published with my novel "The Witch and the Sunflower Girl" -A Halloween and Christmas story about Karma vs tyranny and Free will vs fate. I have to shell out $$$ all of my marketing and or do it myself. Its a great story but we are in an information overloaded society and I have to cut through clutter.

Laura, you're right. Going indie is a lot of work. As I mentioned on Konrath's blog in March, it pays to put in your time to learn the craft of writing. Write a great story. You also have to be willing to pay to have professionals help you. You absolutely must package your book well. Be flexible. It's okay to change as you go along and grow as a writer and a businessperson. Price is important. Not every author or book will be successful. Distribution is key.

Just as there's one in 10,000 that make it through regular publishing (possibly an even lower number). I happen to know quite a few authors who are self-publishing and making thousands of dollars a month (off the top of my head I know of at least 50). But those are authors who are serious about their books - not people who slap a story together and stick it out there with very little effort expecting it to make millions.

hey guys, thanks for commenting. As @e0e22a80e04a511353028119c5403634:disqus points out, most self-publishing services (including Amazon's) are free. It's definitely a lot of work though! A few of the authors we spoke with said they've outsourced some of it, like cover design and dealing with the grunt work, but didn't pay more than $1000 for those services.@c1d45717b9b692abd66c6e2c663cfba3:disqus -- Amazon pays a 30% royalty on titles priced under $2.99, and 70% royalty on titles between $2.99 and $9.99--definitely beats publishers' standard ebook royalties of 25%, but again, it's a lot of work to do it yourself!

And for every one that makes it there are probably 10,000 who make nothing at all. It's impossible for the majority to make this amount of money. I wonder what the average ebook makes over a year. I'd be surprised it was $10.
