More and more companies are starting to think of the mobile screen as an adjunct to the big screen, but only as long as you are still paying for cable. Time (NYSE: TWX) Warner’s new iPad streaming service allows mobile users to see the same content they’d see on the TV so long as the cord is still fully intact.
As we previewed a few months ago at SXSW, Time Warner has followed through with plans to stream CNN and HLN on the Web and iOS devices. A new video player is also part of Monday’s announcements, which CNN said in a blog post made it “the first news organization to stream its linear television channels online and on mobile devices.”
There is of course a catch: the streaming service is available only “to consumers who subscribe to a multi-channel video service,” CNN said. Those multi-channel video services include AT&T (NYSE: T), Comcast (NSDQ: CMCSA), Cox, DISH Network, Suddenlink and Verizon. Somewhat bizarrely, even though the two entities aren’t formally related anymore, Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) is not among those supported by an application developed by Time Warner. (TWC tells us the two sides are negotiating.)
Time Warner wants to promote its “TV Everywhere” strategy with its mobile and Web products, incorporating features like a smart player that lets users stop watching a stream on one device and lets them pick up where they left off on another connected device. The new apps are available in Apple’s App Store, and customers of the above cable and satellite services can authenticate the applications by logging into CNN with their user name and passwords from their cable/satellite services.

You should also make clear that this service is also available on regular laptops independently of the Ipad, which is actually different from a lot of similar offerings at this point.
