I actually don't think this is a bad model -- plenty of authors sell direct to publishers and then work without an agent. That's all that's being created is a new publishing avenue which works directly with authors. It all boils down to how ethical and honest any individual is within any organization -- agency or publishing house.

My agent owns a publishing company. She has not once, EVER suggested that I publish with her. I think it's a great option for authors who have a book that isn't selling to the major publishers. Or for a project that they want total control over, and don't want it in the hands of a larger publisher.
I think it comes down to a trust issue between an author and his/her agent. Certainly if my agent only did a half-hearted sell of my book before suggesting their own company, I'd be skeptical, and SHOULD be. I think this has a LOT more to do with HOW the agent handles their own publishing company, and for me, it's a nice option to have. I requested my agent to publish a book of mine, and she listed her sub-list for the book and told me to think long and hard about that before jumping in.
Popular authors self-pubbing books is becoming more and more popular, and this seems to be a nice mid-way point between self-publishing and a large publishing house. Are there potential problems? Yep. But there are no matter what venue an author takes.
