After four years as CEO of WPP Group media shop MEC, Lee Doyle is stepping down as head of the company’s North American operations. However, Doyle, a 12-year-vet of MEC, will still remain within the WPP GroupM unit that oversees the media buying and planning agencies, though the company has not said exactly what he’ll be doing, other than it’s a “new direction.” Charles Courtier, CEO of MEC Global, will take over for Doyle until a new head is chosen.
As Courtier looks for a successor for Doyle, the current management will remain in place in the U.S.

The media buying agency business has gone through a tremendous upheaval since Doyle took over, with the advent of ad exchanges and agency trading desks significantly altering the role. The agency has claimed success — 40 percent growth over the past years, Courtier said in a statement — even as the ad recovery seems to be withering a bit in the face of continued global economic worries.
