Techies should meet my mom. She has a three-year-old iPhone that she thinks is the greatest invention ever but she really doesn't know a byte about half the apps, just her favorites. All the girls in the canasta club want white ones. Her 18 month old grandchild can say iPhone and knows how to swipe through the pictures and she doesn't understand anything about anything. This is an appliance, for f**k sake and how dumb would it be to be making all this fuss over a toaster or a microwave. Get over yourselves.

I have to admit. I couldn't care less. I don't need a new phone every year and most iPhone 4 users are probably still happy with their existing phone (I know I am and had no plans to upgrade even if it was an iPhone 5 that got released).

Those users who are ready to upgrade and want to stay with Apple will do so. It's not like the iPhone 4 had stopped selling. A better iPhone 4 will continue to sell too.

The iPhone 3GS sold fine, and I seem to remember people being outraged that it was just a faster iPhone 3G (which in it's case was pretty much true as there were far fewer improvements in the 3GS than there are in the 4GS).

In a few months most people are going to forget why they were so indignant about this and the 4GS will be selling fine.

The market has changed and Android devices are being launched thick and fast with better features and improved software. Yes Apple still has an edge with its end-to-end eco-system but that's not enough to maintain its reputation as the innovative leader in the field. By launching an improved version of the same phone they have effectively ceded their leadership position to Android and mostly to Samsung. They may also be making it easier for the upcoming Windows-Nokia phones to impress (assuming Microsoft gets their act together). They will keep selling many iPhones, but their share of the overall market will continue to decline.

It was a huge mistake to keep the form factor identical. Apple should know better...their products are as much fashion statements and status symbols as anything else and the fan boys care as much about having the latest as the do the actual capabilities. Now they are going to have to nudge their buddies and say "really, it's a 4GS". This mistake is going to cost them 25-50% of the sales potential.
They are also relying too much on software gimmicks...who uses 5% of Excel? If this thing were thinner with a bigger screen and no more capable than a 4G they would sell like hotcakes.

Yes in fact I do believe that Apple dropped the ball. It's about meeting customer satisfaction not mogul avarice , unless you're from the era of the infamous card game "screw your neighbor!" - again! Who has made the conglomerate the success they are - not the illusion of excellence which we have not seen today - the customer getting more sophisticated and refusing to accept anything less than true excellence is the driving force.
