The search term is still present in the left-hand bar but not the top, horizontal bar, at least on my end.
It's such a bugbear and adds so much time to the way I use Google. But it's just one of a series of UX foul-ups Google has perpetrated in recent weeks.
Reader, Mail, Calendar, Search... the whole new aesthetic is terrible.
And it's not just shock of the new. The changes have been derided by anyone who knows much about usability and render the products less easy to use.
Google is putting catch-up to Facebook (Google+) ahead of its core products.

i saw the same thing happen with image search and its annoying because the behavior is already established in my head. perhaps the big question is if this is on Google's path to organizing the world's information?

Since the introduction of the categories in the left nav bar, I have never used the top nav to navigate on Google, so I would never have even noticed this change. If you search Google and then click 'News' in the left nav, your search term is persistent.
