Meehan, like most newspaper publishers, approaches this the wrong way. Instead of concentrating on what newspapers need, he should be looking at what their customers want. Publishers no longer control subscriber behavior the way they did when print was the sole source of news. Consumers can choose to read in print, online or on mobile devices like tablets, so newspapers need to be fully available in whatever format consumers want to read. Trying to dictate consumer reading habits by doling out bits of news on tablets while withholding other news is just silly. Paper, web and mobile are all just different means of getting to the same news. Make the news available on all of them and let customers decide how they want to read.

Having worked with various media organisations I think I have the experience to respond to this query about tablet journalism is the future. At this juncture this seems like science fiction but what happens 10-20 years from now. your guess would be as good as mine. But looking at the present day journalism I'd like to point out that print media goes along with tv channels because if someones watching a programme and suddenly theres a pause for ads. Like everyone i'll switch over to some other channel. So the advertisers know the problems involved with electronic media. Moreover, the majority of print media newspapers etc might not be ready for training their staff and incurring a huge expenditure they can't afford. Specially the third world countries. And as the third world countries continue to lag how can the developed countries rush forward. They have to take everyone along. Information industry cannot survive in islation. I think my friend has to take a different approach and reassess his proposal.

"Tablet Journalism Is The Future"

Why is tablet journalism the future. Plenty of headlines and articles make claims like this, but they never explain why. It would be difficult to justify a headline like that, because it's pure rhetoric with no basis in the real world.

The newspaper editor quoted in this article does not even specifically claim that tablet journalism is the future.

Mentioning trendy topics like tablets in headlines has become a cheap way for websites to get more hits, but this offers no value to the reader.
