Artists need to jump on the bandwagon. Money is no longer made from selling your music, you are selling your brand - by performing live on stage, appearances on tv shows, book deals, royalties from merchandise sold at concerts, etc. Gone are the days where people spend $50 bucks a month on CD's or records, be glad you're getting something as opposed to ZERO dollars you would get if someone just downloaded your CD from a file sharing or torrent site.

"Some 5,500 UK radio plays are required to equal royalties from one download"

Huh? Radio royalties in the UK would typically be between £10 and £100 per play depending on the size of the station. I think what is meant by a 'radio play' in the quote is not its usual meaning - e.g. 'Lady Gaga's latest single got 20 plays on BBC Radio 1 this week' - but the number of 'plays' by individual listeners. So if Radio 1 has a million listeners, 20 plays in the usual sense = 20,000,000 plays in the sense used here. I do not see much point in comparing this with Spotify, where the listener chooses what tracks to play.
