Truly successful marketing campaigns are all about the content. Lionsgate had a fantastic book series to start (great content) and created unique, interactive content to supplement (more great content). I think it's great that they are focusing on valuable content rather than pushing photos and trailers. I haven't been following this much but it would be cool if they had each of the main characters Tweeting to each other.

Actually they spent a great deal of money making the movie and the books were already a huge success on other people's effort, time and money.
That was the reason for the success - they had the content.
The success is fantastic, but let's not portray this as some humble low-cost social media tryout.

I think being a best seller as a book already probably made this pretty easy to do. If this was a movie without the best-seller status, I would be surprised if this campaign would have worked at all.

Re: THG Social Media Marketing: “I can’t emphasize enough what they were able to accomplish with so little money,” said a marketing executive for a rival studio.
Creativity over spend does work occasionally in Hollywood. Lionsgate was smart to roll the dice with this campaign; trusting a loyal fandom to help market the film online by empowering them with cool, original content. Watershed moment in Social Media Marketing!
