IndiePub authors can indeed go into their local bookstore and ask the struggling small business for front table space - and thereby displace the Simon & Schuster and Hachette titles ...maybe even sell 15 copies to their small town neighbors each month... or they can spend the same amount of time/effort marketing to the global community and sell thousands of books, as I have done.

An ad in the local newspaper? That's like aiming a BB gun at a bumble bee - where's the match up of (1) people who read (2) people who read your genre (3) people with a pair of scissors in their hand who will cut out your "small ad" and carry it around in order to remember your name the next time they go to the IndieBound bookstore? (Amazon performs these match ups for IndiePub authors - on a global scale) ..This kind of small thinking is for the next guy. Why start small and/or local?? I sell thousands of books from Amazon's own global internet platform, and if some of those sales are to my own hometown neighbors - I benefit...and Larry benefits. Whoo Hoo.

Well I don't think your local bookstore is going to put any Amazon self-pubbed books on their valuable counterspace. Amazon will need to figure out how to play nicer with real bookstores and offer them a darn good discount to buy their pubbed books and be an Amazon showcase. Let's see what they offer libraries.
