I’d say it isn’t the tweets but rather the images and videos that are probably uploaded with the tweets – the tweets are minor.

It would also be interesting to know if the problem was an outbound one (people sending tweets) or an inbound one (people checking their tweet stream during the event itself and clogging the network from fetching information to their phone).
My guess would be on outbound stuff – I assume the MNOs worked hard to get download speeds properly for people on the ground so they can consume media while they are at the events, but they haven’t calculated properly how much uploading people would be doing while watching the games.

Just a thought.

how do they know it’s “tweets” and not mobile internet traffic which can be e-mail, facebook posts, photo/video uploads, etc.?

I attended multiple JOOG meetings. It was an embarrassment to our industry to watch the squabbling and posturing, because the Tier1 mobile operators “all” said they had it (the 2012 Olympics) covered whilst BT (no different to AT&T behaviourally) said they had their bit covered by availing FON (communal WiFi reliant on residential AP’s) for free, during the Olympics events. The country has no 4G unbelievably. Whilst no one dare’s admit it, this is fundamentally because the incumbent MNO’s spent too much on 3G licenses, now lack capacity and have been stalling the regulator for 5 years in relation to the 4G spectrum auction as a result, so as to extend the ROI window for 3G… meanwhile their networks are broken and these are the lame (brush off) excuses.. So avoidable!

Better article would be how people tweeting results is cutting into NBC’s tape delayed coverage where almost EVERYONE knows the result before the airing.
