Public wifi is an interesting marketing tool. Before the London Olympics, Virgin Media rolled out free wifi at major London Underground stations[1]. On connecting, you had to view a Virgin Media splash page before being able to browse.

This will soon become a paid service but will continue to be free for subscribers of Virgin Media's home broadband services. Seems like a good marketing campaign to make everyone start using the service and provide a reason for them to switch at home.
