One of the wisest decision they have made. Opening your content to the public doesn't necessarily mean losing profit for your business. If they know how to entice the readers, they would surely gain more customers than lose profit. I think the thing about this is you don't have to give everything for free. One just has to save the best for the paid ones so they know it's still worth having to pay to get the more.

I would like to know more about the source for the claim that The Times has signed 130,000 digital subs. I cannot seem to find an attribution for this metric on your site. It is equally unclear if this figure relates to the current number of digital subs, or the total number signed so far, but not excluding churn. I have met one person who subscribes to The Times, digitally. But I am prepared to ignore the anecdotl evidence if there is a concrete and authoritative number. Is there such a number? Is it audited? Until I see better evidence, I remain very doubtful that The Times has actually got more than 100,000 people paying them £4/week.

"If you’re asking someone to pay for something, it has to be very clear what they’re paying for.” Executive editor Danny Finkelstein said: “When we showed it to people, that was the model they preferred"

That'll be "people" as in Rupert, James and Elizabeth Murdoch then, it certainly isn't people as in you or I.
