So theft of a 100 yen song could lead to a fine of 2,000,000 yen or 2 years in jail? What other law anywhere in the world has punishment so disproportionate to the offense?

I have read that what is unique about the Japanese law is that it not only punishes those that upload pirated content, it also punishes those that download or view pirated content.

This is decidedly more severe law raises all sorts of questions about the type of monitoring that needs to be put in place to enforce such a law.

I think we all see the inevitable world shift of the internet freedom. During the days the West was being established in the US, there were no laws, or at least anyone to enforce them. Like the Wild West, the Internet will be brought to its heels and law will be established. Our brave hackers will continue fight their brave fight and our will young riot and protest, but in the end....I will not be able to steal media anymore. Which is fine since I already stole it all.
