Another weird wrinkle is that if his blog was anywhere else but on nytimes.com, the NYT would have had vast coverage of Nate Silver (eg, Sunday Magazine cover picture and profile, editorials and op-eds on “The Meaning of Nate Silver and such). But he instead probably got less coverage by the other parts of the NYT than Romney’s old dog Seamus.

i was really happy to hear that Obama won, but i did not get the newn on my local tv network, anyway, i had to change to bbc the next morning before i knew who truelly won.

NS had been updating the site with commentary until around 11:27 EST, then, following a stretch of no updates at all, his cohort Micah Cohen had three or four updates suddenly appear. I figured the servers slowed from traffic build up or NS was otherwise detained — he did an in-house video interview that might have taken place at that time. Silver was active between 10:30 and 11:27, with the last post of the evening time-stamped at 2:31AM. The caution to pronounce a win only with other news sources cited is evident in Silver’s texts. I don’t think Romney conceded until nearly 12. Better to be accurate than first!

Actually, I felt that the election result data on nytimes.com noticeably trailed result updates from other sites the whole night.

Dennis, you’re right that Silver was right on, which is why I’d have loved to hear more from him as the results came in — for those of us who’ve been following him for so long, I felt last night was a good time for a mix of stats analysis plus commentary, kind of the way his Twitter stream normally is.

Clear headed, rational analysis of facts and figures is not profitable. Good for Mr. Silver and maybe NYT, but bad for broader media landscape. A “tight race” keeps the eyeballs and clicks anxiously attentive.
