Sensational journalism - they want that "stay tuned" effect to get more viewers. I don't know if this is the decline of traditional media, because thats happening regardless if they post this garbage and call it "news," thanks to their broken business models. I think this is more a decline in "journalism" because this is what actually passes for news on these top outlets.

I give them credit for trying to be real-time but hopefully they will check their facts next time.

If I substitute "old media" with "police department", it is clearly the police department's fault for not properly vetting the caller before responding (vs. reporting) to this hoax (vs. viral video).

Having spent more than 20 years as a TV news producer/manager before quitting to work fulltime on our award-winning, profitable, market-leading neighborhood-news website - I am embarrassed more often than not when I take time to watch what's left of my old industry. Some stations not only throw up the latest "viral clips" but even waste a reporter's time standing in front of a video window showcasing them. Among friends old and young, old media and new media, I was the only person I knew who took a look at the "eagle" video and said "Yeah, SURE that's real." Yes, we run some photos and information from our community - heck, we won a national award (Online News Association, 2010) for "community collaboration." But verification isn't difficult. And we practice more restraint than most of the old-media orgs working in our area - not taking eyewitness accounts as gospel (such as a police standoff in which a neighbor claimed the suspect had a hostage, which we did not and would never have reported without police verification, which of course never came because it wasn't true). Anyway, whether you're old media or new media, a little bit of ethics, common sense, and responsibility can go a very long way.

Great post Mathew and it's absurd to me that even morning show media would't take the veracity of even "cute" videos seriously. Even random friends who re-post those random Facebook rants about privacy, etc. get very embarrassed when they turn out to be fake.
Shouldn't we expect a bit more from people whose job it is to tell us what's going on in the world?

I completely agree with Lindsey. I seriously doubt that new media is the source of the problem, it is just a source for that problem to be amplified. Modern technology has not only made it easier for the old outlets to fall into such traps more often, but has enabled a whole population of online people across the planet to recheck what those outlets are saying. I also think it is part of the reason for the decline in income. As more and more people are offered other sources of information, they no longer need to trust in the traditional sense, they can get information from a half dozen different sources, reducing the risks inherent in a single source. Of course not everyone does this, but in the internet it is the general tendencies and the effect of the masses that matters, as opposed to a few individuals who decide what to show you.

@txpatriot: while I agree that creating such a video and actually saying "this is real!" would be a problem, simply creating such a video for entertainment (which is what youtube is mainly about) certainly is not as much of an issue. I do not check out the top videos on youtube because I want to know what happened in the world today, or to find out what new developments have been made in science... and I treat any video with a heavy dose of skepticism, while being happily entertained all the while. Official news outlets are expected to show what is actually happening in the world, and most people watch/listen/read these outlets with very little skepticism.

I completely agree with Lindsey. I seriously doubt that new media is the source of the problem, it is just a source for that problem to be amplified.
