The Knot’s acquisition of pregnancy media company The Bump was just a baby step: the total purchase price, according to the company’s 10-Q filing, was $1.4 million in cash—$1.7 million if related costs are factored in. The deal was a component of CEO Janet Scardino’s plan to move beyond just wedding content.

—Costs: On the higher costs that dinged earnings: “Product and content development expenses increased to $5.0 million for the three months ended March 31, 2008, as compared to $3.1 million for the three months ended March 31, 2007, as a result of increasing investments in our information technology platforms and related information technology and project management staff. The increase is also the result of additions to our editorial staff.”
