Adobe Acquires Online Word Processing Company Buzzword; Launching Its Media Player

Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE), in an attempt to get in on the online office suite train, has bought Virtual Ubiquity, a firm that offers an online word processing service called Buzzword. Terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed. Buzzword was built by an 11-member team in Waltham, MA, who helped create the 1980s-era Manuscript, Lotus’s second program created after its ground-breaking 1-2-3 spreadsheet, reports Reuters.

Also, the company is launching an online document-sharing service called Share...users select the documents they want to share, send a message to recipients and determine whether to let their files be publicly accessible or restricted.

Both services will be free, though extra features could be charged for down the line. Adobe expects to integrate both these into PDF workflows, the company said…also, Buzzword and Share will also be made available as desktop apps that connect online. Adobe Media PlayerAlso, on the media side, Adobe is launching its pre-announced Adobe Media Player in beta tomorrow, and the focus is solely to allows users to play Adobe’s Flash files in a branded player environment. While other players can play Flash videos, they generally require that users download and install codecs. And it has no plans at this time to enable its player to view non-Flash videos, such as Windows Media Video (WMV) or QuickTime Movie (MOV) files, the company said. The download takes up less than 1MB, though users must also download the Adobe Integrated Runtime beta plug-in, which is a 9MB file for Windows, for it to run. Adobe has also tied up with media companies such as CBS (NYSE: CBS), PBS, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), Blip.TV, Fora TV, Meredith (NYSE: MDP), Motionbox, MyToons, and STIMTV to offer their content within the Adobe Media Player.
