imageAdobe’s Flash player, a mainstay of the PC and increasingly the phone, is now coming to the TV. At the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas, Adobe Systems (NSDQ: ADBE) announced a new version of Flash designed to deliver high-definition video to internet-connected TVs, set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players. The company said that Adobe Flash for the Digital Home would be available immediately, although TVs that support it won’t ship until late this year.

In announcing the new version, Adobe is acknowledging the growth in the number of internet-connected TVs and preparing for the future. Of course, others have also noticed the trend. For instance, last summer, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) and Intel (NSDQ: INTC) announced plans for the Widget Channel, which is also designed to bring internet applications to the TV. Samsung said that several of its models would support the service starting this spring and, according to its website, is selling the TV Widget-enabled sets now.

But Adobe’s clout is obvious: It announced a long list of partners Monday that it said would support the technology, including Comcast, Netflix, Disney Interactive Media Group, and Intel. Release.

Brightcove: Separately, Adobe announced it would expand a strategic alliance with online video platform Brightcove Inc. The two companies will collaborate on technology to “enhance the quality” of online viewing and accelerate content protection for rich media, among other things.
