AH Belo Slims Loss, But Revenues Fall Significantly

Cost-cutting helped narrow AH Belo’s Q3 loss to $5.8 million from last year’s $17.2 million, but plummeting revenues suggest that the company will have tough time making it back to profitability. Total revenues were down 17.5 percent in Q3, as combined print and online revenues dropped 27 percent, mostly due to the 40.6 percent fall in classified dollars. While the owner of the Dallas Morning News and Providence Journal saw online revenues slide 19 percent to $11.4 million in Q308, this past quarter’s 14 percent decline to $9.7 million can’t be considered much of an improvement. The one bright spot was circulation revenues, which gained 11.6 percent thanks to price hikes, a move that other papers have taken over the past year as other revenue continues to dwindle.
