Alibaba Increases Its U.S. Presence With Second Acquisition In Two Months

China e-commerce site Alibaba has acquired eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) auction management provider Auctiva. This is the Hong Kong company’s second U.S.-based purchase in less than two months. In June, Alibaba bought Vendio, another eBay auction manager based in San Mateo, CA. Both deals are part of Alibaba’s plans to invest $100 million investment in its AliExpress unit, a wholesale unit aimed at small- and mid-size businesses in the U.S.

Alibaba’s sudden U.S. focus also comes after months of tension with Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), which partially owns it. The Alibaba Group has talked about buying back its shares that Yahoo owns.
