Amazon Acquires Audiobook Indie Brilliance Audio

Amazon continues to expand its on-demand publishing strategy, this time acquiring Brilliance Audio for an as-yet-undisclosed sum. Brilliance, founded in 1984 and touted as the largest independent U.S. publisher of audiobooks, will continue to operate independently within the e-commerce giant; founder and president Michael Snodgrass is still in charge and the operations will remain in Michigan. So why buy? Amazon hopes to use Brilliance, which currently publishes 12-15 new titles a month, to expand the number of books available in audio—and to enhance the sales possibilities for its CustomFlix subsidiary, which announced at the same time that it would support both standard CD and MP3-CD audiobook formats via its Disc on Demand service. Release.

I wonder if this will also be incorporated into Amazon’s upcoming (DRM-free) music store…
