Amazon Kindle DX’s NYT Discount Starts Rolling Out; Outside Delivery Area Only
Back when Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) DX launched, a big hype around the announcement was how it would optimize newspaper/magazine display, and that the media companies would subsidize the Kindle, or perhaps the other way around. In the end, it was a bit anti-climactic, as David pointed out back then: subscription to WaPo, NYT and its sibling Boston Globe would be subsidized, but only in areas where home delivery doesn’t already exist. Well, it has started rolling out, at least for NYT. According to an e-mail sent out by NYT (and picked up here by CJR), buyes of KindleDX, at $499, get one year of NYT on Kindle for free. NYT’s monthly Kindle subscription price is $13.99, which makes it about $168 a year, so that effectively bring KindleDX otherwise pricey tag down a bit. It also throws in a free NYT Kindle cover.
