With Latest Layoffs, AP Hits Goal Of Reducing Payroll By 10 Percent

The Associated Press’ layoffs this week, combined with earlier cuts, have trimmed payroll costs by 10 percent, the wire service said in a statement. The final tally of the layoffs was 90 news department staffers, the AP said. About 71 jobs were represented by the Newspaper Guild, which has kept a detailed list of the specific positions affected by the cuts. The guild members make up 1,300 of the AP’s roughly 4,000 staffers.

The layoffs began on Tuesday, when employee groups across the country met to hand out the pink slips.

Even in these times, layoffs have been rare at the AP. To make the 10 percent payroll reduction, which CEO Tom Curley outlined last year, the AP also relied on a voluntary retirement program last summer, which saw 100 staffers take buyouts. The AP’s hiring freeze and attrition policies are remain in effect. On top of these other methods, sources speculate that the AP also cut stringer budgets in order to reach the 10 percent reduction.
