Apollo Group To Acquire Online Ad Network Aptimus For $48 million

The sun continues to shine on online ad networks—education provider Apollo Group (Nasdaq: APOL) is acquiring online advertising network Aptimus (Nasdaq: APTM) in an all-cash deal for $6.25 a share valued at approximately $48 million. Apollo operates the University of Phoenix, among others; it describes the acquisition as a way to advance the “efficacy” of its online advertising efforts. Aptimus will continue to serve other clients. According to the announcement, Apollo has an exclusive online ad management deal with AOL and Advertising.com set to expire in the next few months and it will switch to internal with Aptimus. The deal is subject to the usual regulatory and shareholder requirements.

Isn’t this Advertising.com’s biggest customer?  How does AOL/Advertising.com even match the tepid 16% growth from last quarter with this in the works?
